SCO vs. Linux: Former chief US district judge appointed as trustee
Edward Cahn, a former chief US district judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, has been selected to take the reins at SCO following the bankruptcy court's decision to entrust the continuation of SCO Group's business to a bankruptcy trustee. The 76 year-old Cahn was accepted by bankruptcy Judge Kevin Gross and is now in charge of the SCO litigation decisions. As the new trustee, he'll now work to guide the company, which is still fighting Novell and IBM over the copyright and source code to Unix, out of the impending bankruptcy according to Chapter 11 of US bankruptcy code. Only yesterday, the Court of Appeals ruled that SCO must pay approximately $2.5 million in royalties to Novell.
In addition to being in charge of the course of the SCO Group, Cahn is also responsible for securing the rights of its creditors. One subject of interest among the recent Groklaw comments on the case was the removal of the management team and CEO Darl McBride's loss of power. Cahn will now be the first person outside of SCO to have full access to the "secret evidence" which supposedly protects several high-profile investors. However, before Cahn can decide the fate of SCO, he'll first need to dig through all of the groups financial records and documents.
