Rackspace has announced a large scale deployment of the open source OpenStack IaaS platform in the form of its new Open Cloud system. The company claims it is the first time any company has deployed a public cloud based on OpenStack, a project which originated with Rackspace and NASA. "Rackspace has delivered on our promise to implement OpenStack into the second largest public cloud on the planet" said Rackspace VP Nigel Beighton.

Because OpenStack is open source, developers and enterprises will be able to consider deploying to private OpenStack clouds within organisations or to Rackspace's OpenStack-based public cloud without re-engineering their cloud API usage. It also opens the way for hybrid, private/public cloud deployments under a single technology. Rackspace is making available a new simpler control panel for managing deployment. It is also offering fast deploying Cloud Servers allowing up to 200 servers to be deployed in 20 minutes, and Cloud Databases, a MySQL-based database service built on OpenStack's IaaS.
