Pidgin Logo The Pidgin developers have announced the availability of the first point update to the 2.7.x branch of their open source instant messenger application. The maintenance release addresses a number of bugs found in the previous 2.7.0 release from mid-May, including a three year old bug related to MSN direct file transfers.

Until now, the instant messenger client did not support direct file transfers used by the official MSN client. While MSN file transfers were previously functional, they were very slow. Other changes include a fix for a Windows-specific issue introduced in the last update that caused Window Flashing not to work, OpenSolaris build fixes, MXit updates and fixes for Bonjour, ICQ and XMPP.

More details about the release can be found in the change log. Pidgin 2.7.1 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and RHEL based Linux distributions from the project's site. Since Ubuntu ships with Pidgin, but does not update it after a release it is necessary to refer to the Ubuntu specific install page on the Pidgin site to install 2.7.1 on Ubuntu. Pidgin is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
