Behind closed doors, over Thursday and Friday, the European Commission has been holding a hearing on the proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle. The Wall Street Journal reports that several Oracle customers, including the Spanish bank BBVA, Vodafone UK, the National Health Service and the Oracle user group, spoke in support of the acquisition. The hearing had been preceded by an initiative by Oracle to mobilise customers to speak out on the Commission's objections to the takeover.

In response, MySQL founder Michael "Monty" Widenius called on MySQL users to email the Commission and object to the acquisition. Widenius made the call in a blog posting in which he says "I just don't buy it that Oracle will be a good home for MySQL" and lists things "Oracle has not promised" that he believes are necessary to keep MySQL free and competitive. The decision on the case is due either on Monday the 14th, or within the next two weeks, according to Widenius who supplies an email template for MySQL users to express one of three positions: force Oracle to divest, require Oracle to give legally binding guarantees on the status of MySQL, or allow the acquisition to go ahead unconditionally.
