The OpenStreentMap Project has announced that it now has translations in German and partially in French on its main OpenStreetMap site. The project, run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, is an open source project that is building free online maps, not based on any copyright or licensed map data. The project was started in August of 2004 and has become increasingly popular.

The new translations are the result of the recent London Hack Weekend which took place on the 30th and 31st of May. The OpenStreetMap site will now automatically load the correct language, provided a translation is available, based on the browsers string preference. Users interested in volunteering their time to help with translations are asked to get involved on the dev@ mailing list. More information about translation work and internationalisation can be found on the project's wiki.

The third annual OpenStreetMap State Of The Map conference will take place from the 10th to the 12th of July in Amsterdam. The conference is the leading OpenStreetMap community event and will include workshops and feature talks from several hosts, including OpenStreetMap Founder and Foundation Chairman Steve Coast. Registration for the event is now open and a discount is available to community members.
