O3 Enterprise, the company behind the open source O3 Reporting Workstation (O3-RWS) has recently released version 3 of its software. O3-RWS started as a radiology-specific project, but has since developed into a complete reporting suite for hospitals. The cross-platform Java application supports different kinds of imaging and video data from a variety of sources such as endoscopy footage and ECG tracks. It can also be used to track patient data and create and view a large variety of reports that conform to the DICOM Structured Reports standard.

O3-RWS 3.0 features a completely redesigned UI that allows users to customise the interface for their specific needs. As O3-RWS is typically being used all around a hospital, in different departments that use it for different purposes, customisation of the UI allows users to adapt the software to their specific workflow. Since the software runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X, and can be used with an Oracle or MySQL database backend, hospitals can deploy it on existing hardware relatively easily.

Speaking to The H, O3 Enterprise explained that O3-RWS is currently being used in seven hospitals and one private clinic in Italy, as well as a hospital in the Netherlands. The software is released under the GPLv2 licence and the source code can be downloaded from the O3-RWS SourceForge site. The GPL version of the product is not recommended for use in hospital environments, however, as it is not CE certified. For medical professionals who want to deploy the system in the field, O3 Enterprise offers a supported and certified commercial version and will also assist customers in installing O3-RWS in large deployments.
