NetBeans logo The NetBeans IDE developer team at Oracle have published the first release candidate for NetBeans 7.3; the final release of 7.3 is due in February. The new version's highlight is the integration of Project Easel, an HTML5 application development environment which significantly improves the JavaScript editor and adds a JavaScript debugger, HTML5 page inspector and visual CSS style editor. Easel is built around an embedded Webkit browser but can also integrate with Google's Chrome browser.

Java-centric improvements in 7.3 include a new breadcrumb navigation bar, improved show member and hierarchy views, added hints and refactorings, the ability to filter the Find Usages results and an "effective" POM editor tab for Maven pom.xml files. Java EE users will find a Java Persistence (JPQL) testing tool and enhancements to the REST Service development process. Also coming along is the JavaFX side of NetBeans; 7.3 includes support for FXML/Scene Builder and it works with the JDK 7 Update 6 and later on Windows, Mac and Linux. FXML editing is also improved with accurate code completion and error marking.

Symfony 2 and Doctrine 2 PHP developers will find the parsers now understand name-spaced annotations and there's integration for the Composer Dependency Manager. Twig code completion and improved braces and tag matching are also included. Groovy developers will get the benefit of Groovy 2.0 support and the arrival of basic Groovy refactoring. Other improvements include better memory usage for the C/C++ modes, an improved profiler with support for Linux ARM systems and various updates to the Netbeans platform itself.

New and Noteworthy goes into details of all the changes while the release notes and installation instructions are available along with a selection of 7.3 specific screencasts. NetBeans 7.3 RC1 is available to download for Windows, Mac and Linux and is licensed under CDDL v1.0 and GPLv2.
