Mozilla releases JetPack SDK 0.6

Just over one month after version 0.5 arrived, Mozilla has released the the latest version of its JetPack plug-in technology framework. The JetPack SDK enables anyone that knows HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons, also known as extensions.

The sixth release now allows developers to specify a width for widgets, making them wider or narrower as needed for resizing on-the-fly. By default, Modules also no longer have the unnecessarily elevated privileges that were used for access to the Components (and Cc, Ci, Cu, Cr, Cm) classes; they must now explicitly obtain this privilege by calling require("chrome").

The JetPack SDK developers also note that, based on user feedback from earlier versions of the SDK, a number of bug fixes have improved its overall reliability. These include an issue that would cause tests to fail when using a non-English version of Firefox and support for Firefox 4 beta builds as they are released. Those using the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about JetPack 0.6 can be found in the release notes. JetPack 0.6 is available to download (direct download) from the project's FTP server and a Getting Started guide is provided. Developers need Python 2.5 or later and version 3.6 of the Firefox web browser or later to make use of the SDK.
