The Mozilla developers have announced the availability of version 1.0 of Firefox for Mobile, also known as "Fennec". The mobile web browser for Nokia's N810 and N900 devices running the Maemo open source operating system includes several elements from its desktop counterpart Firefox.

Firefox for Mobile uses an optimised version of Mozilla's "TraceMonkey" JavaScript engine and features support for third party add-ons and tab browsing using thumbnail images. The mobile version of Firefox for Maemo also includes the "Awesome Bar" smart URL bar, Location-Aware Browsing support and one-touch bookmarking. Other notable features include support for Mozilla's Weave sync extension that allows users to sync their history, bookmarks and passwords from their desktop, an improved touch interface with quick zoom, spell checking and a download manager. The developers note that there are already more than 40 add-ons available for the mobile browser and strongly recommend that users install the YouTube Enabler add-on.

More details about the release, including a list of known issues, can be found in the release notes. Nokia N810 and N900 users can download the latest release by visiting Firefox.com/m. Alternatively users can also install a version of Firefox for Maemo to try on their PCs under Windows, Mac OS X or Linux.
