Zoom The Linux Mint 12 LXDE desktop
The Linux Mint team has announced the release of the LXDE version of Linux Mint 12, code-named "Lisa". LXDE is a lightweight desktop environment that is designed for computers with low hardware specifications such as netbooks, older computers and mobile devices. The main version of Linux Mint 12 was released in November 2011.

Linux Mint 12 LXDE is based on Ubuntu 11.10 and comes with LXDE 0.5.0 and the 3.0 version of the Linux kernel. Updated packages include Firefox and Thunderbird 7.0.1, version 2.33 of the Transmission BitTorrent client, VLC Media Player 1.1.12, AbiWord 2.8.6 and version 2.10.0 of the Pidgin IM client.

This is the first time the LXDE release is being shipped as a hybrid ISO image, which means it can be more easily copied to a USB stick using the dd command and users do not have to use special tools for this task. More information on how to install Linux Mint in this way can be found on the Linux Mint Community site. Additionally, just like in the main edition, the default search engine for the LXDE version is now DuckDuckGo.

Linux Mint 12 LXDE can be downloaded for 32-bit systems from the Linux Mint site. More information is available in the release notes.
