Linux Foundation announces scholarship program
As part of its efforts towards celebrating the 20th anniversary of Linux, The Linux Foundation has announced its new Linux Scholarship Program and the 'Linux Learners' Student Day, which will take place at LinuxCon 2011 on 16 August. The scholarship program will award five scholarships "to computer science students and Linux developers who show incredible promise for helping to shape the future of Linux but do not otherwise have the ability to attend Linux Foundation training courses". At a value each averaging more than $1,000, the scholarships will cover the costs of one course chosen from the foundation's course schedule in Linux development. Applications are due by 12 July, and the winners will be notified shortly before LinuxCon.
Attendance at 'Linux Learners' Student Day is free; students can register online. Any students who wish to stay on for LinuxCon can register for a fee of $100 with a valid student ID.
The Linux Foundation claims that demand for software development skills in Linux outstrips other areas of IT recruitment. Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs at The Linux Foundation, said "We’re investing in the future of Linux with our new Scholarship Program and are happy to extend our unique Linux training opportunities to developers who might not otherwise be able to take advantage of them."
