The developers of JRuby, the Java VM hosted Ruby implementation, have announced the availability of the first release candidate of version 1.6.0. Described as the largest release of JRuby to date, 1.6.0.RC1 resolves over 256 issues and incorporates over 2,000 commits.

As with all releases, the JRuby developers have improved the stability and performance of the Ruby implementation; among the new features of JRuby 1.6.0 are compatibility with version 1.9.2 of the Ruby language and API, improved call performance, a built-in profiler and RubyGems 1.4.2 support. C based extension support is also included on an experimental basis and RubyGems/Maven integration is previewed. Other changes include the unbundling of RSpec and improved compatibility and usability on Windows.

The JRuby developers encourage Ruby and JRuby developers to test 1.6.0.RC1 to help "shake out remaining issues", and would especially like users to test the Ruby 1.9 mode to ensure good Ruby 1.9.2 compatibility. As a development release, use in production environments is not recommended. The most recent stable release of JRuby was version 1.5.6, in December 2010. JRuby is tri-licensed under the Common Public Licence, GPL or LGPL, and both the most recent stable version and the release candidate can be downloaded from the jruby.org web site.
