Harald Welte has been chosen by the deDECTed.org project to be the official spokesman for the project. deDECTed.org has a number of goals; to understand DECT security better and to create an open source implementation of the DECT standard. deDECTed.org caused a stir at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress (25C3) when they showed serious security vulnerabilities in DECT. In announcing the appointment of Welte, the team said "Harald has had an interest in DECT security for more than three years, and brought together some of the key people behind deDECTed.org".

Welte, a Linux kernel hacker who founded gpl-violations.org, worked on projects like OpenMoko and last year became open source liason for VIA, said on his blog "It's not that I didn't already have way too much work anyway - but I strongly agree that the project needs somebody who is non-partisan and not affiliated with some of the bigger entities involved with the project". Welte hopes he can use his role to "clarify some of the misunderstandings and apparent misrepresentations that the project has had to suffer".
