webOS logo HP has released source code for webOS 3.0.5 in an effort to provide the webOS development community with resources for devices already running the operating system, before the eventual release of the Open webOS project. webOS 3.0.5 was released as an update for the Touchpad in January.

HP announced plans to open source webOS in January, publishing a roadmap that sees the release of previously proprietary HP components over the coming months, culminating in a September release of a complete operating system. This release though, which HP now terms the "webOS Community Edition", is independent of that effort and is a continuation of HP's past releases of GPL and LGPL code, as required by the original code's licences.

An initial examination of the packages list reveals no changes to the set of packages which are being distributed. Interested developers can download the source packages and corresponding patches from the Palm web site under various open sources licences.
