Growl.jpg The Growl developers have released version 1.2 of their global notification system preference pane for Mac OS X. Growl 1.2 is a major update that includes a variety of bug fixes, performance enhancements and new features.

The latest release officially adds support for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and is now fully 64-bit compatible, meaning that users will no longer need to relaunch System Preferences into 32-bit mode under 10.6. The uninstaller is now a Universal Binary application, that no longer requiring users to have Rosetta installed.

The Growl plug-ins, such as GrowlMail, GrowlTunes and GrowlSafari, which are included on the Growl disk image, have also been updated, fixing several bugs and adding 64-bit support. The GrowlSafari plug-in that allows Safari to post Growl notifications has been completely re-written and now works with the WebKit nightly-build launcher. Unlike previous releases, the developers note that Growl 1.2 no longer supports Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger systems and requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later.

Several popular Mac OS X applications support Growl, including Firefox, Thunderbird, Adium, VLC and many others. The Growl notifications can be fully customised with new styles and users are given complete control over which notifications are shown.

More details about the release can be found in the version history. Growl 1.2 is available to download (direct download) and is released under the BSD licence.
