Xandros, which acquired LinSpire and FreeSpire, has announced that FreeSpire 5 will be based on Debian's upcoming GNU/Linux release "Lenny". FreeSpire 5 is due to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2008. The move has been somewhat anticipated since Xandros acquired Linspire in July; Xandros' own Linux distributions are based on Debian GNU/Linux and the move can be seen as bringing FreeSpire fully into the Xandros fold. FreeSpire and LinSpire were based on Ubuntu Linux previously.

Tom House, FreeSpire community organiser said "This is really some of the most exciting news since the announcement of Freespire 1.0. This is what we were hoping to see both the continued development of Freespire and a return to a Debian base." Xandros supply the Linux distribution that comes as with on Asus EEE PC netbooks.
