Flex makes it to Apache incubator

Adobe's Flex has been accepted into Apache's Incubator. After Adobe's initial announcement and later clarification, its plan to donate the Flex SDK to Apache has now moved forward. The proposal for the SDK for building Flash-based applications was voted upon and the results have been published: Apache Flex has been accepted as an Incubator project, with 23 votes, including ten binding votes from members of the Incubator project's PMC (Project Management Committee) and no 0 or -1 (abstain or against) votes.

The Apache Incubator allows projects to operate with mentoring from Apache members to bring the podling (the Incubator name for projects within it) up to Apache standards. This includes normalising how the source code is managed and licensed and making sure the project itself is managed in a transparent and open manner. For Apache Flex, those challenges will also include ensuring that the licensing of the AIR and Flash Player SDKs is modified to be compatible with Flex's new license. The Incubator page for Apache Flex is now live and work has commenced on the work items within the proposal. The last released version of Adobe's Flex is version 4.6, from the start of December.
