According to an interview with Yves Behar, founder of fuseproject, the company which designed the original OLPC XO-1 laptop, the upcoming XO-3 laptop will be a minimalist tablet that will feature an 8.5 by 11 inch touch screen (the size of US letter paper), a virtual keyboard and a camera on the back. "I wanted to bring the One Laptop Per Child identity to life in this new form," said Behar. "That meant taking the visual complexity away, bringing tactility and friendliness, touch and color." The device will reportedly be "practically frameless" and will have no buttons.

Behar says that, as Nicholas Negroponte, OLPC’s founder and chairman, wants the device to have "no holes", its likely the XO-3 will use wireless induction to charge the battery through its rubber frame. As previously confirmed by Negroponte, the XO-3 is expected to cost $75 and is targeted for release in 2012.

Before the XO-3 arrives, however, Negroponte says that the XO-1.5, an update to the current XO-1, will appear in January for approximately $200. Following that the XO-1.75 is scheduled to appear in 2011, based on the same industrial design as the XO-1 and XO-1.5, but with an ARM processor.

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to provide children across the world with low cost laptops for the purposes of self-education.
