Ceylon, Red Hat's Java alternative, gets own home

Ceylon logo Red Hat developer and Hibernate creator Gavin King has opened a new web site for the, yet to be formally released, Ceylon language. Ceylon is a JVM-based programming language that King presented in April 2011 as a statically typed language similar to Java and C#, but formulated based on the experience of Java developers. Currently the language is "a reasonably complete and stable specification" and the developers are working on delivering a usable toolset including a compiler, runtime and Eclipse-based IDE.

The site includes an undated roadmap for the development of the language. A pre-release version of the IDE, as an Eclipse plug-in, is available which allows developers to use a pre-Milestone 1 version of the language. Ceylon's code is in development though and is being hosted on GitHub. A blog on the new site will also be tracking progress and seeking feedback from the community.
