Blender logo The Blender development team has published version 2.61 of its open source 3D content creation suite. The update adds support for motion tracking, allowing users to reconstruct camera and object animation from real footage, as well as composite 3D rendered objects into videos. For loading clips, tracking points and reconstructing motion, a new Movie Clip editor has been also added.

Blender 2.61 includes a new raytracing-based Cycles render engine with a new shading node system and texture workflow that supports interactive rendering and GPU acceleration. The new dynamic paint modifier and physics system can be used to turn objects into paint canvases and brushes. The included ocean simulation tools have been ported from the open source Houdini Ocean Toolkit and allow users to simulate and generate a deforming ocean surface and texture.

Importer add-ons for Atomic Blender (Protein Data Bank) files, Acclaim and C3D motion capture have been added, as have an Adobe After Effects exporter and a Nuke camera animation exporter and importer. Other changes include updates to the render engine API and noise module, improvements to image saving and node muting, camera sensor size and presets, and fixes for 180 bugs found in the previous version.

Version 2.61 is the second release in the 2.6x development series. According to the project's initial release schedule, 2.62 is expected to arrive in February 2012, followed by Blender 2.63 in April 2012.

More details about the update can be found in the release log and Blender wiki release notes. Blender 2.61 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD from the project's site. Licensed under the GPLv2, Blender is sponsored by the non-profit Blender Foundation based in Amsterdam.
