Red Hat has made a pre-release version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.4 available to its customers. With this beta of the fourth minor RHEL6 release, the developers have added drivers for Microsoft's Hyper V hypervisor to the Linux distribution. Although the drivers have been available for some time, they didn't meet the kernel developers' requirements up until a few months ago; this was probably why Red Hat was reluctant to include them. The company has also updated the drivers for VMware's ESX virtualisation solution.

Improvements to the System Security Services Daemon (SSSD) are designed to enhance the system's interoperability with Microsoft Active Directory services. Like the 3.6 Linux kernels, the Linux 2.6.32-based kernel in the RHEL beta is now designed to support swapping on NFS shares. Red Hat says that it has also improved the performance of the pNFS (Parallel NFS) network filesystem, although the use of this filesystem continues to be excluded from the support agreement.

Further details of all changes in the beta can be found in the announcement and in the release notes and technical notes. About two months typically pass between a beta and the arrival of a new minor release; if the company maintains its rhythm, RHEL 6.4 should therefore become available in late January or early February.
