Microsoft has released a PHP developers' tool kit for writing applications for Azure, Microsoft's cloud services platform. PHP SDK for Windows Azure will allow developers to write programs for both Azure and the SQL-like Azure Storage Service built into Azure, which can store BLOBs (Binary Large Object), tables, and queues. Developers will also have PHP classes for HTTP transport, AuthN/AuthZ, REST and error management.

Microsoft started the development of the software package in collaboration with Belgian IT service provider RealDolmen. You can find the BSD licensed project on the Microsoft administered Codeplex open source community site. So far, the project has community technology preview (CTP) status - essentially an alpha version. By late July, the project team wants to have integrated all of the functions. Project developers have a target date of August 21st, 2009 for the final version. Microsoft's cloud environment is also currently a CTP and is slated for release by the end of the year.
