Jono Bacon, Canonical's Ubuntu Community Manager, in association with O'Reilly, has published a book, The Art Of Community. The book aims to act as a "solid guide" to creating productive and enjoyable communities. The book is available to order at Amazon, but is now also available as a Attribution-Noncommercial-Sharealike Creative Commons licence and can be downloaded from the Art Of Community Online web site.

The book draws not only on Bacon's experience at Canonical, but his co-founding of the LugRadio podcast and LugRadio Live, his work with the KDE project and on public speaking at many major open source conferences. It covers subjects such as community planning, clear communication, managing work flow, and promoting projects as well as measuring the community, how to create good governance and how to handle conflict. Announcing the free download, Bacon said "I wanted to not only break down the financial barrier to the information, but also enable communities to share it, to have the content be as useful as possible in the scenarios, opportunities and the problems that face them."
