The Alien Arena development team has announced arrival of version 7.51 of its first-person shooter computer game, Alien Arena 2011. According to the developers, the latest version addresses a variety of issues found in the previous release and includes several improvements and new features.

Alien Arena 2011 version 7.51 features three newly revamped levels and an "extensive rewrite" of BSP surface rendering, resulting in a major performance increase, as well as complete re-writes to the vertex buffer object code and post process effects. Other changes include improvements to shadow mapping for dynamic shadows and several graphical updates. A bug affecting vid_restart on map change has also been fixed, improving map loading times.

Based on the CRX engine source code released by id Software, Alien Arena is a sci-fi themed, free online multiplayer game that features colourful 3D, arcade-like atmospheres and a number of gameplay modes, such as death match. An official Alien Arena 2011 trailer, as well as screen shots, can be found on the project's media page.

More details about the update can be found in the official release announcement and in the change log. Version 7.51 of Alien Arena 2011 is available to download for Windows and Linux – an official port for Mac OS X has been "indefinitely postponed, but work continues on it". Alien Arena is freeware with GPL licensed code and proprietary multimedia resources.
