At the SAPPHIRE NOW and SAP TechEd events, which are currently taking place in Madrid, SAP has announced that its mobile apps will support Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. SAP, which is Europe's largest software company, has also renamed its Sybase Unwired Platform mobile enterprise application platform to simply "SAP Mobile Platform", although the product's site still uses the former name.

Developers will be able to use HTML5 and JavaScript in Microsoft's Visual Studio development environment to create apps for Windows 8 that can then be made available via the company's platform. SAP says that the new version offers extended security features as well as improved authentication and high availability. The company plans to grant developers free trial access to the mobile platform once the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 support has been completed. SAP already supports the development of apps for Android, iOS and mobile web applications.

It was also announced that the Sybase Afaria mobile device management platform has been renamed; it is now called SAP Afaria and will also support Windows 8. Windows 8 tablets with Intel processors are now SAP-Afaria-certified. To go alongside its mobile platform plans, SAP has announced its first six mobile apps for Windows 8: WorkDeck, Manager Insight, Learning Assistant, Interview Assistant, Customer Financial Fact Sheet and GRC Policy Survey.
