Mozilla developer Robert Nyman has created a tool to get developers started writing their first application for Firefox OS or porting an existing web application to the platform. The tool is called the Firefox OS Boilerplate App and it provides a number of basic features many applications have in common, while using minimal dependencies.

The Boilerplate App include examples of Firefox OS Web Activities such as taking a photo, adding a contact to the address book, sending a text message, and dialling a phone number. It also includes options to install the app locally for offline use and to package it as a ZIP compressed archive. The code for the Firefox OS Boilerplate App is available from GitHub, which also hosts a live demonstration that users can try out for themselves using a Firefox OS device or the Firefox OS simulator browser plugin.

Another tool that the Mozilla developers have been working on to make it easier to write Firefox OS applications, and which works well with the Boilerplate App, is Mortar, a set of templates and tools that helps developers turn web applications into touch-friendly interfaces. It includes volo to deploy the templates and many HTML and JavaScript components common to Firefox OS applications. However, Mortar is not only aimed at Firefox OS – the resulting applications are designed to run "run anywhere the web is".
