Amazon Maps API launched for Kindle Fire
Amazon has now officially launched the Maps API for its Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD tablets, which it had first announced in September. The API is included in the company's Mobile App SDK and is supposed to make it easy for application developers to integrate interactive maps into their applications for Amazon's Android-based devices. These can be combined with custom overlays that can display locations and points of interest with markers and pins that can be styled according to the application's design.
According to a report by The Next Web when the API was first announced, Amazon has based the service on technology licensed from Nokia. With the Maps API, Amazon is trying to encourage developers to switch from the rival Google Maps which provides similar services for Android developers. It does, however, currently lack Google's Street View and traffic features.
Interested parties can request access to the API on Amazon's developer web site, but the company has not said how much, or indeed if, it will be charging for the service.
