Update Check is based on Secunia's Online Software Inspector, for Windows only using either Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari or Chrome web browsers. It requires Java version 1.6 or higher, which can be downloaded and installed free of charge. Online Software Inspector recognises the following programs:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Adobe Flash Player1
  • Adobe Reader
  • AOL Instant Messenger
  • Apple QuickTime
  • Eudora
  • Google Chrome
  • iTunes
  • Macromedia Flash Player1
  • Internet Explorer
  • MSN Messenger
  • Outlook Express
  • Windows
  • Windows Live Messenger
  • Windows Media Player
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Opera
  • RealOne Player
  • RealPlayer
  • Safari
  • Skype
  • Sun Java JRE2
  • WinAMP
  • WinZip
  • Yahoo! Messenger
  • ZoneAlarm

An updated list with detailed information on detected versions is available from Secunia. The stand alone versions of Secunia's Personal Software Inspector (PSI) and Corporate Software Inspector (CSI) cover a much wider range of applications.

Notes

1 Firefox and Internet Explorer use different Flash plug-ins, which may be derived from different versions and may need to be updated separately.

2 Java causes some problems in this test because Sun's installation program does not remove all previous versions. It is not uncommon to find four or more Java versions on a single system. Update Check detects old versions with known security vulnerabilities. Unfortunately these cannot be removed using the update link, but do represent a degree of risk. If an attacker succeeds in forcing the use of a vulnerable version, he or she may be able to exploit it to inject malicious software. In order to improve security, we recommend removing any Java versions which are no longer required using the Windows Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs option. As an alternative a small tool, JavaRA, is available to perform this function for you.
