Administration of the add-on manager is done via the "Manage add-ons" option in the "Tools" menu. This can also be reached from the "Options" dialogue box by pressing the "Manage Add-ons..." button on the "Programs" tab.
The user is provided an overview of advanced settings in Internet Explorer and can enable or disable these settings individually.
In addition to ActiveX controls, "helper objects" are listed: browser extensions that do more than just display certain multimedia content in Web pages. The Google toolbar is a good example of such a helper object.
Users should disable all add-ons in the add-on manager and only enable selected add-ons if malfunctions occur. Check the add-on manager occasionally to find out if the browser has been infected with some kind of malware.
