Wireshark Logo The Wireshark project release team has announced the arrival of version 1.4.0 of its open source, cross-platform network protocol analyser. According to the developers, the latest update includes addresses several bugs found in previous versions and includes a number of new and updated features.

The more than seventy new protocols supported range from Apple's Network-Midi Session Protocol to the Zigbee Cluster Library. Wireshark 1.4.0 also addresses various memory leaks in the application and features preliminary Python scripting support, the ability to play RTP streams directly from the RTP Analysis window and a new "jump to timestamp" command-line option. The developers note that version 1.4 no longer includes support for Windows 2000 systems – users running Windows 2000 are advised to use Wireshark 1.2 or 1.0.

Other changes include support for manual IP address resolution, the ability to open JPEG files directly in Wireshark, and rewritten and more efficient packet list internals. Users that have libpcap 1.0.0 or later installed can now also set the capture buffer size on UNIX and Linux, and Wireshark (and the terminal based TShark) can directly enable 802.11 monitor mode. All users are encouraged to upgrade to the latest release.

More details about the release, including lists of the new supported protocols and known problems, can be found in the release notes. Wireshark 1.4.0 binaries for Windows and Mac OS X, as well as the source code, are available to download from the project's site and documentation is provided. Wireshark, formerly known as Ethereal, is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public Licence (GPLv2).
