Avon and Somerset Police have announced the loss of a laptop computer from an officer's car in London on the afternoon of 11 June. The driver of a Deputy Chief Constable was distracted by the thief while the laptop was in his care in Marylebone, West London.

The computer apparently contains no sensitive information, as it is merely a portal device for remotely accessing the Police network. The Police press release states that it is "multiple password protected, and like all force laptops, has encryption software loaded onto it." It is inevitable that laptops will occasionally be stolen, but such a level of protection as this would have been of value in other recent cases of theft.
