VLC Media Player (formerly called VideoLAN Client) has been updated today to version 0.9.8a to address a security threat that was previously reported at the end of November. The 0.9.8a binaries for Windows and Mac OS X have been fixed and updated. The new binaries close the open source media player's vulnerability that arose from a possible buffer overflow within the Real demultiplexer that could be used by a malicious third party to execute arbitrary code. The projects site strongly recommends that all users of the Mac or Windows client update to version 0.9.8a.

The 0.9.8a update brings cross platform media player one step closer to reaching the highly anticipated version 1.0. According to VideoLAN's published roadmap, the project is one month behind it's goal of the version 1.0.x feature freeze. The site also notes that it is one week behind on fixing version 1.0.0 bugs. A date has yet to be set for a 1.0 release.
