VLC Logo The VideoLAN project has announced the release of version 1.1.8 of its VLC Media Player, a free open source cross-platform multimedia player for various audio and video formats. According to the developers, the ninth release of the 1.1.x branch of VLC is a maintenance and security update that addresses several issues found in the previous update from the end of January.

VLC 1.1.8 features updated user interface (UI) elements on Mac OS X, an updated VP8 / WebM encoder known as "Bali" and the addition of a new Dirac encoder based on libschroedinger that's faster than the classic one. Other changes include updates to the MP4, OGG and APE demuxers, fixes in all interfaces and control modules, and improvements to the Windows version, notably regarding volume keys, as well as codec and translation updates. Auto-detection for .txt subtitles has also been corrected.
