The Police Central E-crime Unit (PCEU) that has been rumbling slowly towards establishment since November 2006 has maybe been given a boost by the announcement of Home Office funding "within reason", whereas previously the expectation has been that the majority of its funding would come from commercial sponsors. Simltaneously, it has been proposed to take the unit out of the control the Metropolitan Police – a remit that was itself announced as recently as the InfoSecurity Europe conference at the end of April – and attach it instead to the National Fraud Reporting Centre (NFRC). The NFRC is only in the pipeline itself, but is expected to be in place next year. How significant these proposed changes will prove to be remains unclear as neither agency actually exists right now.
