Twelve thousand Vista installations wrongly declared to be invalid
According to official data, a server outage in Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage authentication software temporarily torpedoed up to 12,000 authentic Vista installations worldwide. Starting last Friday afternoon, customers received an incorrect validation response when attempting to download using Windows Vista software that required a WGA check.
Rebooting a failed Vista installation disabled the Aero user interface and caused the system to only accept security updates. It took Microsoft approximately 20 hours to recognize and fix the problem. The software giant has not released an official statement about the cause of the outage. Those affected by the outage can manually revalidate their systems through the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Web page to restore complete functionality.
