Serendipity logo Version 1.6 of the open source Serendipity blogging software has been released. The new update includes the jQuery framework so that plug-in and template authors can "provide extended functionality to the frontend" and, like plug-ins, templates can now also use config-groups.

The developers have made minor modifications to the API and extended the search feature, which now accepts wildcards. Other changes include updates to several plug-ins, a new "hidden" option for specific author groups and a fixes for a bug related to media database synchronisation. The developers also note that the update addresses a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. All users are advised to backup their database before upgrading to the new version.

Further details about the release can be found in a post on the Serendipity blog. Serendipity 1.6 is available to download from the project's site. Users running previous versions can update by unpacking, uploading the new version and upgrading the database via the web-based admin panel. Hosted on GitHub, Serendipity source code is licensed under the BSD Licence.
