Graham Cluley of Sophos mentions in his blog that last week the UK's SOCA (Serious Organised Crime Agency) published its annual report for 2009 examining the last year's worth of operations.

Although SOCA deals with a range of organised crime of which E-Crime or cybercrime is only a part, two significant successes in countering large scale E-Crime are mentioned in the report which can be downloaded in full as a PDF.

SOCA thwarted potentially the UK's largest ever bank raid against the Sumitomo Mitsui bank in London which if successful would have netted the thieves £229 million. The attempted theft involved secretly recording the bank staff's user names and passwords using key loggers. Although included in this years SOCA report the crime itself apparently took place in 2004.

Cooperating with the FBI, SOCA helped to break up the DarkMarket internet forum. This forum was being used by cybercriminals to exchange and sell cracking software and information. So far 60 people have been arrested in connection with DarkMarket, twelve of them in the UK. The Humberside police arrested one of the twelve, Adewale "fredbb" Taiwo. Taiwo admitted to £600,000 of fraud and was sentenced to five years.
