Royal Navy web site cracked

Yesterday, security specialist Sophos reported that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had suspended the Royal Navy web site following an attack by a Romanian cracker with the nickname of 'TinKode'. TinKode apparently publicised the attack and posted sensitive information gathered from the site as proof of his success. At

Source: royalnavy.mod.uk/ the time of writing the site was still down with a front page displaying the message "Unfortunately the Royal Navy web site is undergoing essential maintenance. Please visit soon."

TinKode has previously attacked public sites run by, for example, the United States Army and by NASA and published details of the security flaws found in these sites. TinKode's activities can be followed on Twitter.

As Sophos points out, the attack has occurred only shortly after the MoD declared in the National Security Strategy that protection against cyber attacks is a "highest priority for UK national security".
