PlayStation Logo The United States District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco has found in favour of Sony Computer Entertainment America's recently filed motion against George Hotz and has issued a restraining order against the alleged PS3 hacker. According to the court documents, which Hotz has published on his web site, he is, with immediate effect, barred from distributing information which could help circumvent the PlayStation 3's security measures. To ensure the preservation of evidence, he is also barred from making changes to his disk drives and computers and required to hand them over to Sony's lawyers within ten days.

Hotz and his lawyers unsuccessfully attempted to argue that he was not subject to the jurisdiction of the California court and that impounding his computers would represent an unreasonable hardship.

Hotz has now removed the previously published meltdr root key and all links to videos, hacks, source code and hacked firmware from his web site. The court documents do not make clear whether, and to what extent, the court has granted the motions against the other alleged members of the fail0verflow group.

Sony currently appears to be engaged in a losing battle against software piracy. PS3 firmware version 3.56, which was released on 27th January and was intended to plug the security vulnerability, has already been hacked.
