MSFT Logo At this week's Tech-Ed in New Orleans, Microsoft has announced that a public beta of Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be available to download by the end of July. The same package will update both operating systems, which are based on the same kernel.

SP1 will include all patches previously released via Windows Update and several additional hot fixes. Users who use Windows 7 as a standalone OS will not, however, gain any additional functionality from SP1.

In contrast, Server 2008 R2 will, as previously announced, benefit from the addition of RemoteFX to Remote Desktop Services. Thanks to hardware-accelerated 3D graphics output and improved codecs, audio, video, animations (e.g. Flash) and 3D applications run during Remote Desktop sessions should feel almost like they are running on a local PC.

The second new feature is called Dynamic Memory. This allows a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V guest system to dynamically allocate more or less memory at runtime.

Microsoft has yet to confirm exactly when the SP1 public beta will arrive or how large the file itself will be.
