Piwik logo The Piwik development team has released version 1.7 of its open source web analytics suite. The major update brings performance improvements and adds a number of new features, including additional reports.

The "Loyalty" report breaks down visitor numbers based on how often they have visited a site, while the "Recency" report shows when a user last visited a site in days (e.g. 1 day ago). New "Visits until conversion" and "Days until conversion" reports have been added to assist in tracking goals. Scheduled reports can now include an "All Websites" summary and, by default, email reports add graphs for certain metrics.

Other changes include usability improvements like new layout options for the Dashboard, support for Unicode characters in graphs, and optimisations for tracking "hundreds or thousands" of web sites. The latest version also includes a new option to force it to use SSL, and addresses cross-site scripting (XSS) and click-jacking vulnerabilities – at the time of writing, the project's security page has yet to be updated with details of these issues.

More details about the major update can be found in the official release announcement and in the New features in Piwik 1.7 blog post. Version 1.7 of Piwik is available to downloadDirect download from the project's site and a user guide is provided.

Piwik aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics. According to the project's site, it is already used by more than 200,000 web sites around the world. Source code for Piwik is licensed under the GPLv3.
