The Inverse development team has announced the release of version 1.9.1 of PacketFence, the free and open source network access control (NAC) system. The developers say that even though this is a minor release it does add new features, new hardware support, performance enhancements, documentation updates and other smaller changes. It builds on July's major 1.9.0 release which added official 64 bit Linux support.

The new features are Basic Access Control in the Web Administration interface and new parameters in switches.conf to manage Web Services enabled switches. New hardware features are supported on the Extreme XOS and the Nortel ERS 2500 Series, including MAC address lockdown and VOIP. Further information on the changes in the new version of PacketFence can be found in the change log and in the upgrade file which are included in the distribution.

PacketFence is a fully supported, free and open source network access control (NAC) system. With a feature set that includes a captive-portal for registration and remediation, centralised wired and wireless management, 802.1X support, layer-2 isolation of problematic devices, and integration with the Snort IDS and the Nessus vulnerability scanner. PacketFence is designed to be used to secure networks of any scale.

The GPL licensed PacketFence 1.9.1 is considered ready for production use and is available for downloading from the PacketFence web site as source or RPMs for RHEL5. Installation, Administration and Developers guides are all available to download as PDF files.
