The 2008 versions of Norton Antivirus and Internet Security will soon be released for consumers by vendor Symantec. The developers say that the new versions will mainly be faster. The software will reportedly use less memory and both scan and boot faster.

Symantec has added a Browser Defender to both products in order to prevent drive-by downloads. The Defender is designed to keep out contaminants that try to enter systems through unknown vulnerabilities in ActiveX modules, JavaScript, or VBScript in Internet Explorer for example. In addition, Internet Security 2008 will also contain a password safe where users can lock away confidential data. Users can also display an overview of their home network to see the status of other computers on which Norton 2008 solutions are installed. The display warns users if they use standard passwords on WLAN routers. As with Norton 360, antispam and child protection must be downloaded separately.

Support is just one click away: users can e-mail or chat with support staff. The new products, which support Windows XP and Vista, are expected to hit shelves at the end of September. A triple license with one year of updates for Norton Antivirus 2008 is expected to cost UK £39.99; Internet Security, UK £49.99.
