The Mozilla Foundation has extended until mid-May support for Firefox 1.5, that was scheduled to end yesterday, April 24. Apparently, the reasons for this extension also include technical problems with the planned major update to version 2.0 to be offered to users of version 1.5. Now, the plan is to distribute Firefox 1.5.0.12 with respective improvements to ensure that every user who has not switched off the automatic update permanently can upgrade automatically. However, users are strongly encouraged to download manually and install version 2.0.0.3.

The ending of support for Firefox 1.5 also forces Linux distributor Ubuntu to revise its strategy for 6.06 LTS (long-term support). Potential updates for 2.0 shall be ported back to version 1.5. This might, however, cause a delayed delivery of the patched version. According to Jane Silber from Ubuntu, the company is considering an upgrade to version 2.0 via the normal package management, since the automatic update function for Firefox is disabled under Ubuntu. Debian 4.0 is already effectively including Firefox 2.0 under the name IceWeasel. Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 and openSUSE 10.2 also work with Firefox 2.0.
