Military ID cards wander the world

The Ministry of Defence has revealed to Parliament that 6,812 UK military ID cards went missing last year: 50 per cent more than in 2006. An MoD spokesman has stated that as the ID cards carry photographs, "it would be difficult for them to be used by individuals they have not been assigned to.” Little further information is available at present, but there do not seem to have been any significant single instances of bulk loss – more probably continuous attrition, similar to that experienced in the NHS.

Meanwhile, across the pond, the theft has been announced of more than a thousand ID cards from an Army Reserve training centre in Milwaukee. Originally it was thought that only a couple of hundred cards had been stolen, but it transpires that the thieves got away with 1,400, plus equipment including computers, cameras and a laminator that would enable them to create further fake IDs. A reward of $2,000 has been offered in what is being described as "a really big problem".
