On January the 9th, next Patch Tuesday, Microsoft plans to release eight security bulletins and security updates for holes in Windows, Visual Studio, and Office. At least two critical holes in Windows and Office, that allow for malicious code to be injected and executed on a Windows PC will be corrected. It is not, however, clear whether the three security holes in Word, that have been known for almost four weeks, will be closed. Microsoft does not generally provide any details in its announcement for Patch Tuesday. It is therefore not clear how many weak points the updates will close in total. On the last patch Tuesday in 2006, 7 updates closed 11 holes.

Administrators can get ready to reboot systems, as some of the updates will require rebooting to take effect. In addition to the patches, Microsoft is once again releasing an updated Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and the software vendor has announced two high-priority updates that do not concern security, which will be distributed via Windows Update (WU) and Software Update Services (SUS).
