Following the beta in September 2010, Microsoft has issued a release candidate for Internet Explorer 9. Compared to the beta, the new features in IE9 RC focus mainly on security, including the addition of a Tracking Protection or Do Not Track, feature.

The publication in December of the US Federal Trade Commission's paper on the protection of consumer privacy in today's digital economy has applied some pressure on advertising networks. Browser and search engine providers, such as Mozilla and Google, have reacted by adding various mechanisms to allow consumers to control or block cookie tracking mechanisms and there has been some discussion of the merits of the various methods for controlling tracking.

Internet Explorer business and marketing senior director Ryan Gavin said Microsoft has opted to use both header controls and customisable blacklists: "Using only the header is too narrow a solution,".

IE9 RC provides an option under the Safety sub-menu to add sites to a block list with a tolerance level setting. The tracking protection is triggered once a tracker is detected across several sites – the number of sites before protection is triggered is specified by the tolerance level setting.

IE9 RC is available for download from www.beautyoftheweb.com. A detailed technical breakdown of IE9 RC is available from the Microsoft IEBlog site.
