Microsoft plans record patch day

Microsoft says that next Patch Tuesday it will issue the largest number of bulletins ever: 14 updates will close 34 security holes in Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and Silverlight. Eight of the updates scheduled for release on Tuesday the 10th of August, have been rated as critical, including those for Internet Explorer.

The updates affect all versions of Windows from XP SP3 to Windows 7, Office 2002 to 2007, Office for Mac, Microsoft Works, and Silverlight 2 and 3. In a blog post, the Microsoft Security Response Center also mentions SQL, but doesn't provide any further details.

In addition, Adobe plans to fix the recently disclosed hole in Adobe Reader and Acrobat with an emergency patch during the third week of August. The hole was first presented by security expert Charlie Miller at the recent Black Hat conference – although initially nobody took much notice.

Foxit's Erik Bryant told The H that the company plans to release an update for its PDF reader to patch the vulnerability later today (Friday). Bryant says that the vulnerability has been fixed in the company's upcoming iPhone version of Foxit Reader.
