Microsoft has now released the final version of its online virus scanner at the Windows Live OneCare Safety Center. The company stresses that, in contrast to other online scanners, virus removal is free.

The scanner has three scan levels. The protection scan scans your computer for viruses, trojans and other undesirable software and removes any malware it finds. It also finds any "vulnerabilities in your Internet connection" – meaning that it scans for open ports on the computer.

The clean up option is intended to optimise the system. After the scan, it runs the Windows Disk Cleanup utility, which deletes temporary files and suggests what other files on the computer are ripe for sending to the happy hunting grounds. The tune up goes one step further and, after the scan and Disk Cleanup also runs the defragmentation utility, to get your computer really purring.

Microsoft is well aware that an online on-demand scanner is no replacement for a local virus scanner with background monitoring. The company therefore recommends that users should install an on-access virus scanner. The Redmond company recommends using the paid for Windows OneCare service, which has been available to US residents only since June 2006, and is being rolled out for other countries over the coming months.
