McAfee Logo For its proposed multi-billion dollar take-over of anti-virus specialist McAfee, processor vendor Intel has had to make various concessions. On Wednesday, the European Commission only approved the transaction subject to certain conditions. For instance, Intel committed to ensuring fair competition between the parties and their competitors in the field of computer security, said the European Commission in its press release. The US company has reportedly agreed to keep its processors and chipsets open for third party products and ensure that vendors of rival security solutions will have access to all necessary information.

Intel Logo "These changes will ensure that vigorous competition is maintained," said the European Commission's Vice President in charge of competition policy, Joaquín Almunia. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had already approved the acquisition in December. Intel had announced the proposed take-over last August and has placed approximately $7.7 billion on the table for McAfee.

Intel plans to provide tighter integration between computer hardware and security software – which could further strengthen the vendor's market position. Based in Santa Clara, California, McAfee is a veteran in the anti-virus business. The AV vendor has 6,100 employees and most recently achieved an annual turnover of $2 billion.
